The true prevalence rates of child sexual assault are almost impossible to determine due to the fact that many people both men and women, disclose many years after the abuse has stopped. Ultimately, we don’t really know how many boys are sexually abused in Australia. We don’t know how many men never report or talk about it, or how many only talk about it in private.
Men are a lot more likely to be sexually abused as children than as adults. Research undertaken by the Australian Institute of Criminology (2013) found that the rate for sexual assault for males is highest between the ages of 10 to 14 years of age (96 per 100,000 of the population), followed by those aged 0 to 9 years old (56 per 100,000 of the population).
