Following the sexual assault or abuse, survivors may have injuries, and may need to have tests and intervention for sexually transmitted infections. It is important to address all physical impacts as soon as possible.
It is also common for survivors to experience body memories in which physical sensations related to the abuse can be triggered or re-experienced.
Since the sexual assault or abuse happened, you may have found your appetite has been affected. You may not want to eat as much as before or at all, or you may find yourself bingeing or ‘comfort eating’ which in the longer-term may affect your physical health and self-esteem. You may also prefer to avoid sex. All these experiences are normal and will pass in time.
The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre acknowledges that we conduct our work on the lands of the Ngunnawal & Ngambri People, Traditional Custodians of the Canberra region. We pay respect to First Nations Peoples and Elders past and present throughout the nation. We recognise the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities, and acknowledge that lands were never ceded.
